Tidal TurnUp
Concept, Mobile Design
Tidal is a global streaming music service offering on-demand “high fidelity streaming” in over 85 countries. As the desire for music streaming continues to grow, Tidal is looking to revolutionize how people share and listen to music with a new synchronous listening experience called TurnUp.
Integrating this feature set into the existing mobile app, Tidal sought strategic direction with a human-centered design approach.

Research
To inform interaction design of TurnUp I researched competition in the on-demand music streaming industry and the online turntable business. I also conducted user interviews to learn about the desires and behaviors of streaming music listeners.

UX STRATEGY
VISION
TurnUp brings music lovers together in a synchronous music experience through music rooms, encouraging users to share music with each other, collaborate on playlists and discover new music around the world.
DESIGN CRITERIA
Consistent Tidal experience: TurnUp features should integrate nicely with the Tidal product and brand, not distract.
Join in on the fun: Make it easy to invite friends to engage via existing social platforms (ie. Facebook, Twitter).
Power to the user: Give the user control and freedom within the room via status, ability listen without contributing to playlists on conversations, and an easy way to exit.

APPLICATION MAP
The TurnUp feature was designed to fit into the existing application, with a new set of pages off the main navigation to create and listen to music in “rooms”.

Prototype
A low fidelity prototype was developed using InVision, testing two user flows: Create Room and Join Room. Check it out here.

Final Designs
Following existing brand guidelines, final designs incorporated album cover artwork, and utilized the primary color palette of black, white and cyan.
